UFV’s political science department cordially invites you to a Politalk special lecture titled, ‘Where are the women in Africa? Can Ghana’s affirmative action bill improve women’s representation in politics?’
The event takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in room A225 at UFV Abbotsford.
Ghana has often been portrayed as a role model for democracy in Sub-Saharan Africa, thanks to the relatively peaceful transition of power since the country’s first democratic elections in 1992. However, Ghana is behind other African countries in terms of the gendered aspects of political governance. This lecture will explore whether the affirmative action bill that was passed by Ghana’s Parliament on July 30, 2024, can achieve its aims of promoting gender equality and women empowerment by addressing the systemic barriers that have hindered womens’ political participation in the Ghanaian society.
