UFV walk-out in support of Afghan women — Aug 15

On Thursday, August 15th at noon, we will gather to commemorate three years since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. This event takes place on the UFV  Abbotsford campus, in the walkway between the Student Union Building (Building S) and the UFV Athletic Centre (Building E).

Afghan women have been banned from attending university since December 2022, and they’ve been banned from attending high school since September 2021. Now, girls older than Grade 3 are banned from attending any school at all. This event will demonstrate UFV’s support for Afghan women and girls during this time of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.

We are grateful to be welcoming back special guest speaker and UFV student, Sahar Maqsoodi.

Sahar is an Afghan women’s rights activist, writer, and senior student of political science and governance. She is the communications manager and NexusTalk host for HerStory Afghanistan and a youth leader and board member for Pathways to Leadership with the Racialized, Immigrant, and Refugee Women’s Society. Sahar has worked with organizations such as the British Columbia Council for International Cooperation and Girls Toward Leadership. She is also the recipient of the Girl Up Storytelling Award, highlighting her commitment to using narrative as a tool for empowerment and change.
