UFV Trades hosts Skills Canada regional event

UFV Trades recently hosted a Skills Canada regional event, marking a return to in-person competition following pandemic restrictions. The event saw 40 students from Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission compete in five different categories: Electrical, Carpentry, Welding, Automotive, and Architectural Drafting.

UFV Trades faculty members played a key role in the success of the event by serving as technical committee chairs and setting up the competitions. Mike Dielman oversaw Electrical, Patrick Watchorn managed Carpentry, Matt Olafson led Welding, Greg Wedel organized Automotive, and Wes MacAulay was in charge of Architectural Drafting.

The winners of the regional event will now compete in the Provincial Skills Canada competition, which will be held on April 19 2023 at Tradex in Abbotsford. The gold medalists in each category are Matthew Cooke for Welding, Gabriella Neufeld for Electrical, Bjorn Thoma for Carpentry, Carla Vergara for Drafting, Brandon Kennard for Mechanical CAD, and Wyatt Rempel for Automotive.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to UFV Trades faculty members for their hard work and dedication to making this event possible. Best of luck to the gold medalists in the Provincial Skills Canada competition!
