Relationships: A Cross-Cultural Exploration — Nov 8

You know what you expect from others when relating to them—what you expect from students, colleagues, family members, and neighbours — but how much do you know about what individuals raised in a different cultural background than your own expect when interacting with you? And what happens when mismatches in expectations occur? How does it impact the way in which you relate? Can it affect a student’s academic ability? Or impact how well you can achieve your goals to be an effective teacher or university staff member?

In this session, we unpack a variety of relational expectations (relationships both inside and out of the university), from different cultural perspectives. Join us to hear (and share) about how relational expectations are shaped by the cultures from which we originate, and how our cultural assumptions influence our experiences and the outcomes of our interactions.

The goal of this session is to take a quick but deep dive into rethinking how we can successfully relate to others when interacting with individuals from different cultural backgrounds than our own. Come ready to share and participate!
