Decolonization in Practice: Institutions and Public Communication — Thurs, Nov 3

Zoom code: 560153

Decolonization, Reconciliation and Indigenization: What does this mean for institutional communication?

How do messages put forward by institutions and communities impact BIPOC members when those messages are still deeply rooted in colonialism? As members of UFV-FSA DRISC (decolonization, reconciliation, indigenization standing committee) we will address the meaning of those terms and discuss what decolonization can look like on a personal level.

How did so many post-secondary institutions get it wrong?

Recognizing and working to mitigate the natural tension that arises from decolonizing institutions is an ongoing process. This requires us to be more intentional and thoughtful, more responsive, and less reactionary. Collaboration is key and leveraging the breadth and depth of knowledge we have is important. We need our critical friends.

Attention to Students and Community Pulse — Authentic and Critical Engagement

What does it mean to understand a ‘pulse’ of an academic, student, and university community? What happens when that pulse is not felt, and what happens to the student experience of learning? Sharn Sandhra will discuss the implications of this, along with what is at stake when authentic and critical engagement is not fostered. She will provide meaningful solutions on the urgency of the work needed to foster growth in relation to ongoing calls to action and accountability.
