UFV’s Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program approved by the BC Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS)

The UFV School of Continuing Education has reached an important milestone with the approval of its Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program by the BC Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS) on August 11, 2026.

The approval confirms that UFV’s new MLA program aligns with the provincial competency profile and curriculum established by BCSLS for medical laboratory assistants in British Columbia. It ensures that students will receive education and training that prepares them with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to enter the profession.

“Recognition by the BC Society of Laboratory Science is an important milestone for UFV’s newly launched Medical Laboratory Assistant program,” said Carolyn MacLaren, Director of the School of Continuing Education. “It reflects the significant work that has gone into developing a program that prepares students for the profession and supports the need for skilled health-care professionals in British Columbia.”

The program’s first cohort will begin in January 2027 at UFV’s Chilliwack campus. Students will complete career-focused coursework and hands-on learning designed to prepare them for work as medical laboratory assistants in a health-care setting.

The approval marks another step forward for UFV’s School of Continuing Education as it expands opportunities for students to pursue careers in health care and supports the university’s commitment to meeting the workforce needs of the region and province.
