Hockey and Canadianess with Dr. Brett Pardy — Apr 25

Join the Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas and UFV’s Community Health and Social Innovation Hub for conversations around advancing equity in our community.

For this special event on Thursday, April 25, we’re honoured to welcome Dr. Brett Pardy to share an informative presentation on Hockey and Canadianess.

For decades, hockey has been presented as intrinsic to Canadian identity. But what does the current state of a game dealing with multiple crises and opportunities say about the state of the nation? How can hockey culture of both participants and fans change to better represent all Canadians?

Pardy teaches in Media and Communication Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley. His research focuses on the emotional impact of media on learning and unlearning conceptions around racism, masculinity, community, and mental health. He is the senior editor of the website Hockey and Society.

All are welcome, and refreshments will be served.

Please Note: Unfortunately, due to the cafeteria’s construction B101 is not accessible to those with mobility restrictions and requires the use of stairs. If this is a concern, please reach out to chasi@ufv.ca to discuss alternative options.
