Giving Tuesday is approaching on Nov 28 in support of the UFV-SUS Food Bank. The food bank is a dedicated space where students in need can access a range of items, including non-perishable foods, toiletries, and personal hygiene products. Since the beginning of the academic year, the UFV-SUS Food Bank has seen an estimated 500 per cent increase in requests for food hampers.
By donating, you provide much needed resources that not only alleviate immediate hunger but also reduce financial stress, allowing students to focus on their studies and overall well-being. Every dollar and item donated will go towards replenishing the food bank while supporting its sustainability throughout the academic year.
The food bank has dedicated student volunteers who help coordinate the many moving pieces, including filling hamper requests, stocking shelves, and supporting other initiatives such as the breakfast program. Ray, a Lounge Leader for the Student Experience Office, shares her insight on the food bank program :
“I believe the Food Bank to be a beneficial program to support students looking for additional assistance with food security, especially in light of the increased food prices. Working with the Food Bank is a rewarding experience knowing that these items will be used to provide assistance to our community. It makes me recognize that we need more funding to keep providing this service to students to fulfil the demand for better food security on campus.”
Ways to Get Involved:
1. Sign up for payroll deductions: Provide a steady source of support for the UFV-SUS Food Bank. Even a small, consistent donation can accumulate to make a significant impact over time.
2. Donate on Giving Tuesday: Mark your calendars and make a one-time donation to the UFV-SUS Food Bank on Nov 28. All donations (up to $10,000) to the food bank will be matched.
3. Build a food hamper: Come together as a department to build a food hamper in support of the UFV-SUS Food Bank. By building food hampers filled with essential items, you can provide immediate support to those facing food insecurity. Pick up your package at the Advancement office at Abbotsford campus (B249) or Student Services at Chilliwack campus (A1318). Please drop them off by Nov 28.
On Giving Tuesday, let’s break the barriers to education caused by hunger. Your support for the UFV-SUS Food Bank is a step towards a brighter future.
