Canada’s land force commitment to NATO and Ukraine in Europe — Nov 9

UFV’s Political Science department welcomes two guest speakers to a Politalk special lecture on Thurs, Nov. 9 at UFV Abbotsford.

Canadian Armed Forces major Jürgen Miranda and LCol Jesse van Eijk will talk about Canada’s land force commitment to NATO and Ukraine in Europe through Operation REASSURANCE and Operation UNIFIER.

Miranda joined the armed forces in 2005 with the 75th Mississauga Company, Toronto Scottish Regiment (Reserve). After completing officer training in 2011 he was posted to 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, where he served as a platoon commander and Company Second-in-Command in Alpha (Mountain) Company, deploying to Southern Alberta to assist in flood response under Operation LENTUS in 2013.

In 2019 Miranda deployed to Latvia on the NATO deterrence mission, Operation REASSURANCE.

Promoted to his current rank in 2022, he was assigned command of Bravo Company and deployed to the United Kingdom under Operation UNIFIER.

LCol Jesse van Eijk joined the Canadian Armed Forces as an infantry officer in 2001 and attended the Royal Military College of Canada, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering in 2005. He led the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry five platoon for three years and deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2008 for Operation ATHENA.

In 2017 van Eijk deployed to Poland as commander of Operation REASSURANCE Land Task Force, and in 2022 he was appointed commanding officer of the Operation REASSURANCE battle group in Latvia.
