Sad news: Myra Hughes has passed away

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Myra Hughes, nee Vandergronden, on Sept 24, 2023 at the age of 63.

Myra worked at UFV for more than a decade. She spent time in auxiliary in 2010-11 as an International Education assistant, admin assistant in Professional Studies, admissions clerk, and office clerk in the Arts Advice Centre. She was an assistant in the Geography department, and department assistant in Chemistry and Physics, and then Kinesiology before retiring in November 2021.

She returned for two months in 2022 (Feb 1 to Apr 1) as special projects auxiliary for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Hughes also worked for the Faculty and Staff Association in an administrative role. She was FSA secretary from August 2007 to August 2009.

While a UFV employee, Myra also served on the JPDC (Joint Professional Development Committee) on the FSA’s behalf as FSA Co-Chair from 2019-2021 and again from 2021-2022.

Her family provided the following information:

Treasured wife of 22 years to Jeff, beloved daughter to Corrie, much-loved sister to Marcel (Ronit), Yvonne (Andy), and the best auntie to Sean (Jaime), Serena (Larry), Jocelyn (Gero), Ashley, and a fun great-aunt to Brayden, Lucas, Harper, and George. She was very social and full of life, which led to her abundance of great friends, whom she cherished.

Myra recently retired from UFV to spend time with Jeff, her family, and friends. She had her hand in so many ventures; she was an avid painter, seamstress, crafter, and the ultimate baker of sweets, to name a few. Myra was a nurturing person, taking great pride in being an active member of her neighborhood community and always ensuring everyone was cared for.

Her bright light and big heart left us too soon, but we will remember her warmth, love, and generosity.

Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Oct 21, 2023, from 1-4 pm at the Sandman Hotel Abbotsford, 32720 Simon Ave, Abbotsford, BC

If you are so inclined, please wear pink, in honor of Myra’s favorite color.
