JUNE 6 | Clare’s Law: The right to ask, the right to know – but not in BC?
In 2014, England and Wales introduced Clare’s Law in memory of Clare Wood, who was the victim of femicide by her former intimate partner. Clare’s Law allows people to apply to the police for disclosure of information about a history of abuse among current or former intimate partners. Several Canadian provinces have recently introduced Clare’s Law via provincial legislation. A similar attempt to do so in British Columbia in 2019 was not successful.
This event will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Charlotte Barlow from the University of Central Lancashire about her research on Clare’s Law in the United Kingdom. Additional presentations will be given by the Ending Violence Association of British Columbia and the ‘E’ Division RCMP regarding the potential benefits and challenges of introducing Clare’s Law in British Columbia.
