Library moving to OpenAthens for Resource Links

What’s happening?
On Dec 21, the UFV Library will be moving to a service called OpenAthens. This new service will have users sign in with their UFV single sign-on credentials (same as myUFV, myClass, myFiles, myMail) to provide a more seamless experience when accessing digital library resources (e.g., articles, videos, and eBooks). It also enables users to access UFV licensed resources from webpages other than the Library’s website, such as Google, publisher websites, and more.

Why is the Library making this change?
To make accessing resources easier for you. We understand research can be hard and that many students and employees go to Google when looking for information (ouch, our hearts!). With OpenAthens, you will be able to login into publisher websites via ‘institutional login’ and be able to tell if the resource you are interested in is something that the UFV Library has access to (handy, right?). It is no replacement for a good old Library search. Additionally, this service uses single sign-on (having the same credentials for the Library as myUFV, myClass, myFiles, etc.), and let’s face it, having one less password to remember will be easier for all of us.

What does this mean to me as a student or employee?
If you have saved links to resources from the UFV library those links will not work after Dec. 21. In other words, if you have a link with either “https://proxy.ufv.ca:2443” or “http://proxy.ufv.ca:2048” that goes to a UFV Library article, video, or eBook, it will no longer be functional. We realize this may be inconvenient for faculty, staff, or student research assistants. To avoid losing your links, please use the UFV Library’s OpenAthens LinkGenerator [https://go.openathens.net/generate/ufv.ca/80150666 ] to update the links yourself.
