ABOUT THE TALK:
IIT Bombay has been striving hard on start-ups to boost innovation capabilities for increasing the competitiveness of clusters. It has climbed up quite well in research and executive education, as well as rankings such as QS (QS, 2020). For instance, IITB has been in the Top5 in QS rankings for many years and is enhancing its start-up ecosystem to climb up at the Asia level. IITB has a leading technology-business incubator and has several start-ups (being incubated or graduated or by alumni) that are doing well, particularly in the digital platform economy such as Ola (ride-sharing), CareNX (innovations in healthcare), ideaForge (Drones, Aviation, and Aerospace) and WKA (knowledge automation).

With several innovation-based start-up clusters, including in British Columbia, Canada is poised to lead in competitiveness, including in emerging industries such as nanotech (e.g. Momaya, 2011; Maine et al., 2014) and related industries such as pharmaceuticals (e.g. Haldar et al., 2016). There may be potential for cooperation opportunities at multiple levels. Building on rich experiences of partnerships with Japan over the years, we explore potential, taking the case of select emerging industries such as digital platforms, biopharmaceuticals, and clean technology to identify specific experts, centres, and start-ups. This exercise can strengthen linkages and exchanges by identifying areas for collaborative research projects.
