Reflecting on Race/Racism and Canadian Media
2:00 to 4:00 pm | F125 [SASI]
When looking at the alarming rise in issues of race and racism in the world, we often look to our neighbors to the South that somehow Canadians are more ‘tolerant’ and ‘accepting’ and issues of race and racism do not occur to the same levels in our country. In 2019 in Canadian politics, academia, media, sport and culture there were significant examples of how this is hardly the case. The Canadian media hold a critically important position in reporting/presenting this news and in some cases the media (members and organizations) is itself the perpetrator of racism and race based ideologies in their reporting or in their management practices. From the 2019 campaign trail of NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, to Don Cherry and the National Hockey League and the Trudeau ‘blackface’ scandal, we seek to explore the deep-seeded histories of racism in this country and seek to understand the role and responses of Canadian media (organizations and persons). Join panelists Anupreet Sandhu Bhamra, (journalist), Mo Dhaliwal (digital strategist) and Jagdeesh Mann (media professional) as they discuss these issues.
