Raabe presents at International Conference on Philosophical Practice in Mexico

How does philosophy merge with education and mental healthcare to improve the lives of people outside the academies and clinics? This was an important part of the general theme of the 15th International Conference on Philosophical Practice, held at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in Mexico City from June 25 to 29. Conference attendees and presenters came from all corners of the globe including Australia, Argentina, Botswana, Israel, Japan, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and the US. UFV PD support allowed philosophy associate professor Peter Raabe to be part of a panel discussion titled “The Relationship Between University and Philosophical Practice.” He carried this theme further on the last day of the conference with his presentation titled “Philosophy as Education and Mental Healthcare.” The discussions were focused on the role of philosophy as both prevention and effective alleviation of suffering that might otherwise be diagnosed as ‘mental illness.’

Raabe notes that there was a lot of interest in the ‘Philosophy for Counsellors’ course (Phil 367) that he teaches at UFV. Both his panel discussion and presentation were standing room only. In August Dr. Raabe travels to China to give a workshop on philosophical counselling at Beijing Normal University.
