UFV gets ready for a new academic year at New Student Orientation

As many current UFV students are eagerly anticipating the end of the winter semester, many people at UFV are already looking ahead to the start of the 2017/18 academic year. A team of over 60 staff and faculty have been getting ready to welcome UFV’s newest students and their supporters at Part 1 of New Student Orientation in May.

Last year, UFV introduced dramatic changes to NSO, including the re-imagining of the event as a two-part series and the integration of academic program orientation sessions. These changes were enthusiastically received by UFV staff and student volunteers as well as the over 1,000 new students and 550 supporters who attended the two events.

At Part 1 of New Student Orientation, students and supporters are invited to participate in campus tours, registration information sessions, a Student Services Fair, academic program orientation sessions, and a special supporters’ orientation. Part 2, which takes place at the end of August, features The Amazing Race, UFV Edition. Like its famous namesake, UFV’s Amazing Race requires teams of new students to complete informative and interactive ‘challenges’ at over 20 stations across campus. Each station features a key UFV resource.

“We were so pleased by the response to the new format of New Student Orientation in 2016,” says Kyle Baillie, Director of Student Life and Development. “This year, we are taking that initial version up a notch by increasing the number of participating academic programs and by inviting UFV staff, faculty, and alumni to help out at the event. Our vision is for people from throughout UFV to come out and welcome the newest members of our community.”

NSO plays a fundamental role in helping new students transition to UFV. Designed to meet the needs of both direct-entry, transfer, and non-traditional students, NSO not only provides students and their supporters with essential information, but it also helps them begin to see themselves as part of a dynamic and supportive community.

New Student Orientation will take place from 4-8 pm on May 16 and 25 at the Abbotsford campus and 4-8pm at the Chilliwack campus at Canada Education Park. The Student Life department is inviting all members of the UFV community — current students, faculty, staff, and alumni — to help out at the event. If you are interested in volunteering at NSO, please contact the Student Transitions Coordinator at orientation@ufv.ca. For more information about NSO, please see the NSO webpage: www.ufv.ca/nso.
