Colter Louwerse, fourth-year political science major at UFV, will speak about Canada’s role in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
A growing number of Canadians are aware of the nature and extent of the injustices and human rights violations occurring in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. However, few are aware of the role that Canada has played in the origins and perpetuation of the Israel-Palestine conflict. This talk will document and discuss Canada’s complicity in the ongoing dispossession of the Palestinians, from the part Lester B. Pearson and the Canadian UN delegation played in the formation and passing of the 1947 Partition Plan, to the one-sided stance of the Canadian government during the 1967 Six-Day War, to Canada’s continuing diplomatic cover for Israeli human rights violations. The factors catalyzing Canada’s uncritical support for Israel will also be discussed as well as a framework for conscientious Canadians who seek to align Canadian foreign policy in the region with Canada’s reputation for peacemaking and humanitarianism.
