Visual Arts international student takes top prize in national competition

sherlsSidi Chen, a second-year international student from China studying in UFV’s Visual Arts department, has been awarded the top prize in the painting category of the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Art Showcase 2016.

Sidi was made aware of the CICan opportunity by Visual Arts professors Melanie Jones and Chris Friesen. He decided to enter a piece he had recently completed entitled Stand Alone.

The inspiration for the piece came from a number of different factors. Sidi notes that he was inspired by his experience as a student who’s in a big chaotic world trying to either stand out or fit in. He also notes that the scenic and ever changing landscape near the UFV Abbotsford campus proved to be fundamental for this work.

As one of the winners, Sidi will have his work displayed at the CICan offices in Ottawa, and will receive recognition on CICan’s website and in various association publications. The winning pieces will also be prominently showcased at CICan’s 2016 Annual Conference in Quebec City.

All are welcome to join for a viewing of and a selection of other works by Sidi at UFV Global Lounge (B223, Abbotsford campus) on Tues, June 14, from 1:30-2:30pm. Light refreshments will be provided.
