Tough competition at School of Business Research Day

IMG_3321This year, six research projects were selected to represent some of the best student research occurring within the School of Business. The reports were thoroughly reviewed by the School of Business Research committee, and on Tues, April 7, the students had the opportunity to present their findings to their peers, and be adjudicated by School of Business faculty.

Research topics ranged from Security Analysis of Avigilon Corp, to the benefits of social media usage on a corporation’s bottom line.

Matt Kidwell, a Finance option student who won the event, presented his research on Coast Capital Savings. He has worked for the company for two years as a financial service representative, and hopes to pursue a CFA designation upon completion of his BBA degree.

This began as a group project in the Fall semester of BUS 320, a business research methods course, but with the guidance from associate professor DJ Sandhu, Matt has taken the winter semester to further develop the research on his own. Since completing the research, he has been approached by a senior marketing team at Coast Capital Savings to further develop marketing strategies based on his research.

“This has been an incredible experience, I was glad to be involved with the research seminar series at UFV, and I look forward to carry out this research further. I want to say a special thanks to DJ for his support and mentorship through this process, and I am really looking forward to finishing my degree at at UFV, and to participate in more events such as these.”

Matt will also presented this research at the university-wide microlecture and student research day being hosted by UFV Research Services.

There were two runner-up teams to the event. One, whose project was titled “Security Analysis: Avigilon Corp” also represented the School of Business at the Western Canada Regional CFA competition. The other runner up team’s  research project was titled “Increasing the Attendance for the Abbotsford Agrifair”.

“All participants in this event did incredibly well, and are a great representation of the research being done by School of Business students,” said Frank Ulbrich, director of the UFV School of Business.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the event, and we look forward to seeing more inspiring research at next year’s student research day.
