Cascades weekend recap: Men’s hoopsters extend win streak to 26

The Cascades men’s basketball team extended their Canada West regular season winning streak to 26 games in thrilling fashion in Edmonton, highlighted the weekend action for the UFV Athletic department.
Head coach Adam Friesen’s squad swept a pair of road games against the MacEwan Griffins, but took vastly different routes each night to get the desired result.
On Friday the CIS No. 7-ranked Cascades blew out the Griffins 123-67, setting a new CIS season-high for points in a single game and a Canada West season-high for margin of victory (56 points). UFV’s stellar three-point shooting paved the way – they hit a scorching 20-of-33 attempts from beyond the arc, led by Manny Dulay (23 points, 7-of-9 from three) and Vijay Dhillon (21 points, 5-of-6 from three).
The next night, the Cascades needed a three-pointer from Kevon Parchment with nine seconds left in regulation to force overtime, and they opened the extra session on a 9-0 run and ended up winning 90-83. Parchment scored eight of his game-high 22 points in OT, while Jasper Moedt had 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The men’s hoopsters (12-0) are in action at home this weekend, hosting the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday (8 pm) and Saturday (7 pm) at the Envision Athletic Centre.

WBB: Cascades swept by Griffins

The UFV women’s basketball team suffered a pair of losses in Edmonton, falling 90-59 on Friday and 83-75 on Saturday.
Sarah Wierks was a bright light in Friday’s defeat, registering 28 points and 14 rebounds. The Cascades turned in a much better effort in Saturday’s rematch, led by Wierks’s 23 points and 13 boards, but MacEwan fended them off down the stretch. Katie Brink scored 19 points, and Celeste Dyck had 13.
The UFV women (6-6) host UBC Okanagan on Friday (6 pm) and Saturday (5 pm) at the Envision Athletic Centre. Friday’s game is their annual Shoot for the Cure night – a fundraiser for the B.C./Yukon chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

WVB: Chargers get the best of Cascades

Winning on the road against the No. 4-ranked team in the nation proved just as hard as it sounded for the Cascades women’s volleyball team.
UFV sustained straight-sets defeats on both Friday and Saturday against the Camosun Chargers in Victoria. The Cascades, ranked No. 9 in the CCAA, saw their record dip to 9-7.
They play at home this weekend, taking on the Vancouver Island University Mariners on Friday (6 pm) and Saturday (1 pm) at the Student Activity Centre North Gym.

MVB: Camosun extends Cascades’ losing streak

The UFV men’s volleyball team had a similar experience to their female counterparts, falling in straight sets both nights to a nationally ranked Chargers team.
Camosun, ranked No. 12 in the CCAA, swept the weekend set to extend the Cascades’ losing streak to seven games. UFV’s record now sits at 6-10.
They look to get back on track this weekend vs. VIU, with games set for Friday (8 pm) and Saturday (3 pm) at the Student Activity Centre North Gym.
