You may know her as a mild-mannered art history professor, but Jill Bain was making history as a pioneer punk rocker from Vancouver Island at the age of 15. Excerpted from the Victoria Times Colonist:
The Dishrags — singer-guitarist Jill (Jade Blade) Bain, singer-bassist Chris (Dale Powers) Lalonde, and drummer Carmen (Scout) Michaud — flamed out after a three-year run. But in that time, they broke down all sorts of barriers.
According to experts such as Jason Flower, the Dishrags were the first punk band in Victoria and one of the first all-female punk acts in North America. That alone would be a fitting epitaph if not for the music they created along the way.
“The gigs all kind of blur together, except for the Clash show,” said Dishrags singer-guitarist Jill Bain. “Of course, I remember that.”
The band reunited, but did not perform, this past weekend to mark the release of Three, a vinyl compilation of their music recordings.
