Nineteen of UFV’s Cascade student-athletes have achieved Academic All-Canadian standards. With 140 student-athletes participating on eight different teams in 2012/13, 15% of those student-athletes have achieved an 80% or higher average in their studies. The overall GPA average of the student-athletes was 2.95 in 2012/13.
President Mark Evered presented the President’s Shield to the Women’s Volleyball program for having the highest team GPA, at 3.16, at Wednesday’s reception honoring the 19 student-athletes. This caps off a brilliant year for the women’s volleyball program. The Cascades won a school-record 25 regular and post-season matches, earning the PACWEST and CCAA gold medal, both titles are school firsts.
“I am very happy for the team. It is a perfect ending to an excellent year,” said UFV women’s volleyball head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.
The previous recipients of the UFV President’s Shield were the Women’s Volleyball program in 2007/08, 2008/09, 2011/12 and the Men’s and Women’s Rowing programs in 2009/10 and 2010/11. The men’s soccer program had the most individual Academic All-Canadians at four.
“I’m very proud of what these student athletes have accomplished and they are most deserving of their awards,” commented UFV athletic director Rocky Olfert. Mallory Donen, a member of the women’s volleyball team, agreed. “I am proud of my teammates. We are achieving great grades in the classroom and at the same time we won the program’s first national championship.”
UFV is committed to excellence in both the classroom and on the field, court and water. The 19 student-athletes that were honored are:
