All classes beginning at 5:30 pm and onward at all UFV locations are cancelled for Tuesday, Jan.14 due to reduced shuttle service, treacherous driving conditions, and predicted snow flurries.
Buildings will remain open and activities will continue as scheduled except rec. badminton which is cancelled.
The SUS shuttle bus will not be operating after 4:30 and will only be running as follows prior:
- 3:30pm ABBY to CHWK
- 4:30pm CHWK to ABBY
- The Langley shuttle route is operating as usual.
No one left behind!
UFV has hired a private coach to return students, faculty, or staff members who need transportation between Abbotsford and Chilliwack – in either direction.
Private bus schedule:
- 6:00pm Abbotsford to Chilliwack (usual pick-up location near SUB)
- 7:30 pm Chilliwack to Abbotsford (usual pick-up location near building V)
A place to stay:
In order to ensure students, faculty and staff have accommodation should they miss this bus or find themselves without transportation, UFV has accommodation arrangements in place. Please call UFV Security Operations Centre at 1-855-239-7654 or local 7654 for details.
Please check UFV.ca for updates.
Smart decision, UFV!
This shows that you do really put staff and student safety above all else.
Stay warm and safe everyone!
Hello. I am glad everyone is getting safe transportation back to their own city, but I am also frustrated to hear that there was a bus to get everyone back all along. Next time please state this kind of information right when you completely change the SUS shuttle schedule. Because of this lack of information I did not go to my 2:30 class in Abbotsford because I would have had no way home if I stayed the entire time. I am sure some others may share similar frustration about this as well.
Also, please consider that the students living in Chilliwack also have to travel to Abbotsford to get to the majority of their classes, so if you’re planning on closing one campus, consider closing the other one at the same time. I am not thrilled that one of my classes are going on and I am losing marks for not being there because this silly change happened with no warning.
Hi Justin,
Thanks for your comment. The extra private bus was added late in the day to avoid students being stranded when the SUS shuttle service ended. The shuttle bus service disruption dictated some quick action to ensure students were not left with just one bus to catch home. This could have led to people being left behind due to capacity issues. SUS did stretch to add additional runs, but hiring the private coach was a sure-fire way to ensure no one was stranded.
UFV has a small committee that does consider a wide range of factors for each campus and we consider the movement of faculty, students and staff and students between these campuses. We do this at 4:30 in the morning and re-evaluate during the day. These are fluid situations and we hope you will understand predicting them is not simple.
We also encourage you to speak with your professors regarding missing class time because of extreme weather. They are aware of the impact of these weather events and the driving conditions faced by all.
That is so thoughtful (hiring a private bus and having emergency accommodations), thanks for looking out for everyone!
Do you have any idea on whether or not the campuses will be open tomorrow?
Hi Emily,
We would love to know tonight, but the overnight weather and road conditions in the morning will inform this decision. Please check UFV.ca at 6am tomorrow for an update.
Hi! What are the chances of ufv being open tomorrow based on these bad conditions?
Hi Sn,
It is very difficult to predict. UFV has a committee that evaluates road conditions, traffic, weather forecasts, ground conditions at each campus, DriveBC alerts, and more data overnight and in the very early morning. We make the best decision we can based on a fluid situation. Please check ufv.ca at 6:00am tomorrow for updates.
I live in Chilliwack and have classes in Abby tomorrow. I depend on the UFV Shuttle to get to my classes. Will the shuttle be up and running tomorrow? I would have to miss classes if it isn’t – which would be really frustrating.
Hi Madison,
We will not know until tomorrow morning. The overnight weather and the road conditions in the morning will inform this decision. Please check UFV.ca at 6am tomorrow for an update.
