Introducing:
- Alysabeth Austin, Educator, Student Rights & Responsibilities
My name is Alysabeth, I recently finished my Masters in Gender Sexuality and Global Politics from the SOAS University of London, where I focused on intersectional gender-based violence and digital diplomacy. I did my undergrad in sociology with a specialization in global diplomacy and the impacts of colonialism on the family unit across cultures. I am an academic at heart, I truly enjoy reading, listening, and learning , which builds the foundation of who I am. I am a firm believer that every single living being has something to offer the world and thank them for that. I am of Native and Irish dissent, I grew up on Vancouver Island, and in Kamloops. Later I moved to Edmonton Alberta with my family, where I pursued fine arts and play writing, which is how I started my undergrad at the Scott Swan directing school in Vancouver, where I realized I wanted to be in a career with more impact. I began my undergrad, studied for two years, then moved across the world to United World College Waterford in Eswatini (a country in Africa) where I worked as the English Department Coordinator, as well as assistant chair to the group Asinekekelane (which translates to we care about each other in Siswati). Asinekekelane was created to support people who had experienced gender-based violence, as well as provide education regarding safe sex, sexual identity formation, and consent. It was through this work that we were able to connect the group to the United Nations. After that I returned to Canada to complete my undergrad and begin my post-secondary career.
I started as a student success navigator, at MacEwan University which allowed me to build the framework to become a Program Coordinator for the school of continuing education. As a program coordinator I reached out to remote Canadian Indigenous communities to give access to higher education to residence at no cost to them. This was done by acquiring government grants and working closely with the Yellowknife city council. After that project was complete, I focused my attention on my local community at the time, I obtained the Merkk Frost grant and partnered with MacEwan photography students. The students were then sent to local senior living facilities where they partnered with elders to capture moments of joy. Afterward, MacEwan held its first Capturing Intergenerational Joy photography showcase. I then left MacEwan to join a grassroots initiative by NorQuest College for international students to connect with their local communities, culture, and supports to help them feel less alone in Canada.
As the political climate changed in Alberta and I completed my MA, my Fiancé who used to live in the rocky mountains and I made the choice to come back to the land that had once raised us and happily welcomed us again. We are so thankful that we are able to live in the Fraser Valley and call it home, it’s beauty is truly stunning and everyday am in awe of it.
