EMPLOYEES NEW TO UFV

February, 2025

  • Heather Simpson, Coordinator, Student Transition & Engagement

And introducing:

  • Todd Odgers, Manager, International Student Engagement

I’m thrilled to join UFV as the Manager of International Student Engagement, where I’ll be leading a fantastic team of five dedicated professionals. Together, we support students in making successful intercultural transitions to life and studies in the Fraser Valley.

My career has always centered around international and intercultural education, training, and research—both in Canada and abroad. Early on, I spent a decade in corporate training and development based in Tokyo, working with companies such as Toyota, Nike, Star Alliance, and Honda. That formative experience inspired me to pursue graduate studies in the U.S., where I published research on best practices for faculty aiming to interculturalize their curriculum and enhance student learning.

This work supported faculty in creating more globalized and inclusive learning environments, benefiting both international and domestic students. Over the past 15 years, my collaborators and I have worked with faculty and institutions across Canada and internationally. During that time, I was invited to launch and direct the Centre for Excellence in Intercultural Education in Edmonton. Over our ten years of operation, our team developed innovative approaches to supporting newcomer transition and integration into careers in industry, business, education, healthcare, and government.

I’m excited to bring this experience to UFV and explore how we can adapt and expand these approaches to enhance the international student experience and support those who assist them across campus.

Outside of work, I’m an avid cyclist who has toured Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia—and I’m currently loving the rides along the coast. Always happy to talk bikes!
