{"id":1713,"date":"2024-12-18T19:40:04","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T19:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/tlc\/?p=1713"},"modified":"2024-12-18T19:40:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T19:40:04","slug":"new-libguide-culturally-responsive-pedagogy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/tlc\/2024\/12\/18\/new-libguide-culturally-responsive-pedagogy\/","title":{"rendered":"New Libguide: Culturally Responsive Pedagogy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2022 and 2023, UFV faculty and staff from across the institution came together to explore resources and share experiences in three separate communities of practice on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy.<\/p>\n<p>The result was amazing conversations\u2026 and folders full of excellent teaching and learning resources!<\/p>\n<p>It seemed a shame to keep them hidden away, so with the support of UFV Library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/library.ufv.ca\/about-the-library\/people\/diane-cruickshank.htm\">Diane Cruikshank<\/a>, they have been organized into a public UFV Libguide.<\/p>\n<p>You can find it here: <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.ufv.ca\/Culturally_Responsive_Pedagogy\">Libguide on Culturally Responsive Teaching<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is Culturally Responsive Pedagogy?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For some, the reference to \u201cculture\u201d can be a bit misleading \u2013 it\u2019s not actually about teaching culture. It\u2019s more about seeing students\u2019 backgrounds, experiences, and cultural forms of learning as assets that can be built on. Any educator can adopt culturally responsive pedagogy, whether you\u2019re teaching math, nursing, coding, writing, plumbing, or visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>The Libguide is structured around a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newamerica.org\/education-policy\/policy-papers\/culturally-responsive-teaching-competencies\/\">model and reflection guide produced by New America<\/a>, that identifies 8 core competencies of culturally responsive educators:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reflect on one\u2019s cultural lens<\/li>\n<li>Recognize and redress bias in the system<\/li>\n<li>Draw on students\u2019 cultures to shape curriculum<\/li>\n<li>Bring in real-world issues<\/li>\n<li>Model high expectations for all students<\/li>\n<li>Promote respect for student differences<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with families and local communities<\/li>\n<li>Communicate in linguistically and culturally responsive ways<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>How to use the Libguide<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For each competency, you\u2019ll find:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reflection questions<\/li>\n<li>conceptual readings<\/li>\n<li>practical ideas for the classroom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You could go through each competency in order, or if you\u2019re looking to strengthen your practice in a particular area, you could begin there. Engage with it individually, or better yet, if you know some interested colleagues, work through it together for increased accountability.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Share your practices<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Are you already teaching in ways that align with Culturally Responsive Pedagogy? Share your resources and practices with the TLC and we\u2019ll add them to the libguide.<\/p>\n<p>We grow in community.
