Support, perseverance lead Miranda Rosehill to Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal<\/h1>\n

Miranda Rosehill put her trust in the University of the Fraser Valley when it came time to choose a university for her Master of Social Work degree. Two years later,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0glad she made that decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miranda is the 2026 recipient of the\u00a0Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal\u00a0at UFV, after achieving a grade point average of 4.27.\u00a0\u00a0Granted to students with the highest academic standing in a graduate degree program,\u00a0the gold medal\u00a0is one of UFV\u2019s most prestigious awards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis recognition is such a lovely close of my journey at UFV,\u201d she says. \u201cI am very honoured.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0only\u00a029, Miranda\u2019s academic journey has followed a long and winding road.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Two months after graduating from Langley\u2019s R.E. Mountain Secondary School, she\u00a0began her undergraduate studies\u00a0at Simon Fraser University, where she earned a joint major\u00a0in criminology and psychology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With her first degree in hand, Miranda began working in child protection, an area that is both challenging and highly rewarding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe get to show up and make a difference in the lives of people, specifically young kids who can\u2019t advocate or speak for themselves,\u201d said Miranda, who fills an emergency after-hours role, mostly on evenings and weekends. \u201cBeing there for people in their darkest moments, being able to listen to their stories and support them \u2014 I\u2019m grateful I\u2019m able to be there for them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But to progress in the field of social work, she discovered she needed more\u00a0post-secondary\u00a0education, and that led her to UFV in 2023.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because the\u00a0Master\u00a0of Social Work (MSW) is a part-time degree, Miranda was able to find a good balance between study and work. She also found time to serve as chair of the MSW committee and as the MSW representative for her student association.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter graduating from SFU, I spent\u00a0almost\u00a0three years as a full-time\u00a0child protection\u00a0worker, building life experience and carrying a lot of adult responsibilities while I was still pretty young,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that prep time\u00a0was so important heading into UFV. I learned time-management skills and how not to stress over things I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0control. Those life skills were so important in the master\u2019s program when I found myself juggling school on top of work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miranda says she\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0have done any of it without the loving support of her partner, Trevor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s been extremely supportive and understanding, and I can\u2019t even put into words what he\u2019s meant to me,\u201d she said. \u201cThe reason I was able to do this was\u00a0because of\u00a0the village that supported me\u00a0in the background\u00a0\u2014 my family welcoming me back into their home while I was in school, my job supporting my\u00a0decision to\u00a0return to school, and my friends being understanding of my\u00a0alternative\u00a0schedule and the\u00a0social events I\u00a0had to miss.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving all of those people walking beside me on this journey has been a\u00a0game\u00a0changer.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miranda says UFV offered a well-rounded education that included a research assistant opportunity with Dr. Leah Douglas, who is investigating the impacts of climate change on mental wellness\u00a0in her research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thankful to Leah for trusting me with important work, and I enjoyed a research role where I was fully involved,\u201d Miranda said. \u201cI extend a heartfelt thank you to her for her faith and belief in me.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For her major paper in the MSW program, Miranda\u2019s research saw her exploring the connections between child protection and climate related impacts, a topic that hits home in many ways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through it all, she\u00a0says the UFV community was incredibly supportive.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFaculty had opportunities come across their desks, and they thought of me,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said. \u201cSomeone nominated me for a graduate studies award, and for them to see me as deserving of that means so much.\u00a0All of\u00a0their support\u00a0strengthened my\u00a0own\u00a0belief in myself and helped me through moments when I felt nervous or questioned whether I belonged alongside so many amazing people.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHaving an army of people \u2014 and an institution, really \u2014 believing in me and pushing me to be the best that I can be, it\u2019s almost unfathomable.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miranda is taking a well-earned pause now. Her textbooks are closed and her last exams written.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0know exactly what comes next, but whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0pursuing a doctorate, focusing on her social work career, or doing something else entirely, she feels UFV has prepared her well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to be in some kind of leadership role in the future, and I might go back for my PhD after I\u2019ve collected more life experience and maybe travelled a bit more,\u201d she said. \u201cFor now, because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been so busy and go, go, go,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0like to relax a bit and catch up with myself before I pursue bigger things. Right now,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0just basking in the moment with extreme gratitude and pride in being able to\u00a0represent\u00a0UFV.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
