JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMER YOUTH WORKER

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley is now accepting preliminary applications for positions under the 2025 Canada Summer Jobs Program.

(Positions are pending approval of funding by the Government of Canada)

Position:                      Youth Worker (Temporary- Canada Summer Jobs Program)
Reports to:                  Team Lead West/East
Start & End Date:        TBD (between 8 – 9 weeks from End of June – August)
Hours:                         30-35 hours per week (day-time hours/some evening & weekend hours will be required)
Locations:                   2 positions in Abbotsford and 1 Position in Chilliwack

 

General Description

This position will:  Coordinate and assist in the supervision of Summer Day Camp Program for children and youth. Facilitate group-based activities for mentors, children and youth.  Assist Mentoring Coordinator’s with program related tasks. Complete administrative duties related to programming. Represent Big Brothers Big Sisters in all summer events with a focus on Volunteer Recruitment and Community Development.

Camp Duties

  • monitor children to ensure their safety and well-being and create an inclusive environment for all campers.
  • enforce camp rules and policies to maintain a structured environment.
  • lead and assist with camp activities, including arts and crafts, sports, games, and educational programs.
  • address behavioral issues calmly and appropriately, following camp guidelines. Report concerns to Camp Director.
  • communicate effectively with other staff members to coordinate daily activities.
  • help with arrival and dismissal procedures, ensuring a smooth transition for campers.

General Summer Duties

  • coordinate and facilitate group activities with mentors, mentees and families.
  • approach local businesses to secure donations for summer events and activities.
  • participate in the planning of various outings, events, fundraisers and activities as needed.
  • participate in public events for the purpose of recruiting and raising awareness of our agency.
  • complete administrative program tasks such as reporting writing, creating event flyers and brochures.

Qualifications

  • educational focus in social services: Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Crim, Psych, Education etc.
  • experience working with youth;
  • or an equivalent combination of each

Skills

  • working with youth and/or managing group dynamics with youth
  • strong communication skills
  • basic counselling skills (attending, active listening, empathy, etc.)
  • computer proficiency; working knowledge of client records management systems

 Requirements (*Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements)

  • be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of employment*
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment*
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada*
  • current class 5 drivers’ license (unrestricted) and acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • clear Criminal Records Check

Assets

  • second language proficiency
  • current First Aid Training certification and Food Safe certification

 

Remuneration

Starting rate: $21.00/hour + 4% vacation pay
