About the project

The Research Assistant is expected to work on one study, which is part of the Inclusive Communities for Older Immigrants (ICOI). ICOI is a project funded by SSHRC and focusing on generating knowledge about social isolation and connectedness among older immigrants.

The opportunity

A Research Assistant (RA) who is fluent in both English and Mandarin or Punjabi is needed to support the work of a three-month study. This study aims to identify the key risk factors for social isolation in older immigrants. The RA will work closely with the research team under the direction of Drs. Denise Cloutier and Satwinder Bains. The RA will support data collection among [Mandarin/Punjabi]-speaking immigrant seniors, using a questionnaire.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit Mandarin/Punjabi speaking immigrant seniors, community leaders, and service providers with support from local site community partners, academic leads, and the Provincial Coordinator.
  • Provide study information for interested older immigrants, community leaders, and service providers.
  • Schedule phone calls, zoom meetings, or in-person meetings, depending on the participant’s preference.
  • Attend phone calls, zoom meetings, or in-person meetings to support participants (may require some local travel).
  • Translate participant questionnaire data into English and input data into the online platform.
  • Work with local site academic leads and the Provincial Coordinator to ensure all data collection protocols are followed.

Qualifications

  • Individuals with training or equivalent education and experience in social work, immigration, mental health, health promotion, community-based research, and/or other related fields or disciplines.
  • Some experience in conducting research, including data collection, analysis, and report writing, with a demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team on research projects.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in English and [Mandarin/Punjabi].
  • Good judgment, tact, and cultural awareness in working with older immigrants.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team.
  • Strong computer skills in Google Forms, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet timelines and achieve project objectives and targets.
