Youth Engagement Worker – Contract Recreation Instructor position with the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department
Wage $18.00/hour
Hours Casual – On Call

The Youth Engagement Worker reports to the Youth Recreation Leader who oversees the day to day activities in the Youth Lounge located in the Mission Leisure Centre. The Youth Engagement Worker will ensure the safety and well-being of participants and interact directly with youth facilitating positive, fun and engaging activities. Candidate should be available to assist in covering a variety of shifts Tuesday through Thursday 3:00pm to 9:15pm, Fridays 3-10pm and Saturdays 5-9pm.

Illustrative Duties and Responsibilities
Direct supervision and engagement of youth in and around the Leisure Centre, including the Youth Lounge and Skate Park
Assists in the planning, supervision and leadership of activities in the Youth Lounge
Ensures the safety and enjoyment of youth in the Youth Lounge and addresses unsafe and unacceptable behavior, or refers to a supervisor as appropriate.
Completes records and statistics as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A working knowledge of recreation, sports, social activities of particular interest to today’s youth
Ability to deal with a wide variety of sensitive youth issues, including crisis situations, substance abuse and LGBTQ issues and the ability to refer young people to community programs or services
Understanding of youth age group characteristics and traits
Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to establish a rapport with various ages of youth and maintain respectful and cooperative relationships
Ability to maintain a high degree of enthusiasm and personal motivation
Knowledge of community resources for youth
Ability to adapt and be flexible
Effective communication, conflict resolution, problem solving and leadership skills

Post-secondary education in youth recreation field of study or social services youth support worker field of study
Minimum 6 months related experience working with youth
Current and satisfactory police reference check – vulnerable sector
Emergency First Aid and CPR C

Support and uphold the established policies and procedures of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department
Maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees, management, Council and the public
Maintain regular communication with supervisors, keeping them fully informed of all non-routine, urgent and/or controversial matters
A working knowledge of the Child Protection Act including duty to report guidelines
