The holidays are long since over and the combination of midterms and long, dark days leaves me feeling languid and unmotivated. Winter has been here for several months and it\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just not leaving<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (see: the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fraservalleynewsnetwork.com\/2019\/02\/10\/preparing-for-the-snow-in-the-fraser-valley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blizzard we didn\u2019t expect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blessedly, it\u2019s almost over. March is just around the corner, which means sunshine and daisies, iced tea in the backyard &#8211; right? Nope! There\u2019s still another month of classes and then exams to get through. If you\u2019ve been going strong since September (or more likely for the last two or three years), another month of school is, well, torture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So yeah, it sucks that it\u2019s not done yet, but there are tons of things you can do to get yourself through the next month. Try something you haven\u2019t done before; sit in silence and notice your thoughts; teach yourself a new skill; run headlong through a frozen forest. And if those don\u2019t lift your spirits, Mac (UFV\u2019s very own good boy\/therapy dog) is having his <a href=\"http:\/\/events.ufv.ca\/events\/macs-retirement-birthday-party\/\">retirement party on Tuesday, March 5<\/a>. This, of all things, will light up your life enough to get you through to the end of the semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Think you\u2019ll lose your marbles if classes don\u2019t end soon? Don\u2019t worry: these tips will keep your marbles firmly in place (until next semester, at least).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Sign up for something\u00a0<\/b><b><i>fun<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/students\/files\/2019\/02\/signupforsomethingfun-300x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"333\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\n<b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This could be anything from cooking to photography to fire dancing. As long as it gets you out of your house, out of your routine, and doing something interesting, it\u2019ll work. Or, if you don\u2019t have the time or funds to take on another class, watch tutorials on YouTube and try it out at home. (Note: please don\u2019t attempt fire dancing inside your home.)<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Attend a meditation session<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/students\/files\/2019\/02\/attendmeditation-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"341\" \/><\/strong><\/b><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m an avid believer that meditation is a fantastic way to help yourself feel better. There are countless studies providing the benefits, ranging from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceofpeople.com\/meditation-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering stress levels to improving focus and memory to boosting our immune systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That, and it can even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2018\/04\/harvard-researchers-study-how-mindfulness-may-change-the-brain-in-depressed-patients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restructure the brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through something called neuroplasticity. As students, what more can we ask for?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Peruse the library<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/students\/files\/2019\/02\/perusethelibrary.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"439\" \/><\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When was the last time you read something for fun? I know from personal experience that, during the semester, you hardly have time to read your textbooks and articles, let alone read something you want to read. So walk around the public library and pick something out &#8211; the weirder, the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Paint something<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/students\/files\/2019\/02\/paintsomething.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"330\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you\u2019re not \u201cartistic,\u201d do it. It\u2019ll take about an hour from your day where you not only give yourself a brain break and deviate from the rigorous routine of a student, but you come out of it with something pretty. Plus, creating art <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bebrainfit.com\/benefits-art\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces stress, gives you a sense of accomplishment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is a great way to get through dark evenings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. Go hiking<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/students\/files\/2019\/02\/gohiking1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I know it\u2019s cold, and that trails are potentially slippery, but have you ever run through the forest when the trees are blanketed in snow and there\u2019s no one else around?
