Spread the word!"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 1190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eh9ti3qk8yf3m8xqr5gt2fp4-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/11395707_web1_180413-ABb-End-the-Word-campaign_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roshan Gosal (far left) is shown here during a recent meeting of Abbotsford high school campaign representatives, Mayor Henry Braun, UFV president Jackie Hogan (beside Braun), and incoming UFV president Joanne MacLean.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>UFV student continues to Spread the Word to End the Word<\/h2>\n<h3>Roshal Gosal of Abbotsford organizes campaign to end the \u2018R\u2019 word<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbynews.com\/community\/ufv-student-continues-to-spread-the-word-to-end-the-word\/\">The Abbotsford News &#8211; April 20, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Abbotsford is among the communities taking part in the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign again this year.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth year that the campaign has been held in the community.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s designed to raise awareness about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the \u201cR\u201d word \u2013 retard or retarded \u2013 and encourages people to pledge to stop using it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abbynews.com\/community\/campaign-aims-to-end-use-of-r-word\/\">The campaign has been organized locally by Roshan Gosal, a Special Olympics coach who first began it in 2015 when he was in high school.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gosal, with the help of his fellow Special Olympic volunteers and athletes, organized \u201cR\u201d word awareness booths at local high schools.<\/p>\n<p>He is now a science student at University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), but continues to have the support of all 11 Abbotsford high schools, Mayor Henry Braun, the City of Abbotsford, and UFV.<\/p>\n<p>Gosal was asked to speak at UFV\u2019s Town and Gown Gala in November and held a successful End the Word campaign at UFV through the Friends of the Special Olympics Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal continues to be to spread this awareness campaign throughout B.C.,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools and universities are embracing this message of inclusiveness and are expressing their support in wonderful and varying manners at different times of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gosal said he has invited every public school in B.C. to join the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel we can all be reminded of the power of our words,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To join the campaign or for more information, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.r-word.org\/\">visit r-word.org.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UFV student continues to Spread the Word to End the Word Roshal Gosal of Abbotsford organizes campaign to end the \u2018R\u2019 word The Abbotsford News &#8211; April 20, 2018 Abbotsford is among the communities taking part in the Spread the Word to End the Word campaign again this year.
