Students from grades K-12 across the Fraser Valley came together last week to compete for thousands of dollars in cash and prizes including the chance to represent the Fraser Valley with Team BC at the Canada Wide Science Fair to be held in Ottawa, Ontario next month. We were honoured to have the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of BC<\/strong> attend again this year! She visited with many of the students, taking part in the science demonstrations and ending off her visit by awarding our two Canada Wide finalists a trip to Nationals.<\/p>\n

The Grand Prize winners, of an all-expenses paid trip to the Canada-Wide Science Fair<\/a> were James Fang<\/strong> (Elgin Park Secondary School) for his project “Effects of Indoor Plants on VOCs” and Raul Pinol<\/strong> (St. John Brebeuf Secondary School) for his project “Geothermal Power Plant Producing Water by Condensation”. They will be joining over 500 of Canada\u2019s top young scientists at Carleton University in Ottawa May 13-18, 2018 and be competing for nearly $1,000,000 in awards, prizes and scholarships.<\/p>\n

Jackie Hogan, UFV President and Vice-Chancellor, awarded Celidh Smith<\/strong>, grade 11 student from Robert Bateman Secondary School, a UFV entrance scholarship for her project “Saving the Saviour Fish: How do we reclaim the eulachon population in the Fraser River?”.<\/p>\n

Dr. Greg Schlitt, FVRSF Chair and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science at UFV, awarded Priyam Mehta<\/strong>, grade 2 student from South Poplar Traditional Elementary School, the Science World Elementary Class Field Trip for his project “Ants and their chemical trails”.<\/p>\n

We were excited to host our very first “Fun with Science” public event prior to the the Awards Ceremony. Over 170 guests toured our beautiful campus while taking in demonstrations put on by faculty and student volunteers. Thank you to all of our volunteers throughout the week! None of this would be possible without you!<\/p>\n
