ABSTRACT:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dear Canada,<\/p>\n

As you celebrate 150 years of Confederation I hear the words of Chief Dan George spoken on Canada’s 100th birthday, \u201cToday, when you celebrate your 100 years, oh Canada, I am sad for all the Indian people throughout the land.”<\/p>\n

Chief Dan George finished with,\u201cOh God! Like the thunderbird of old I shall rise again out of the sea; I shall grab the instruments of the white man\u2019s success-his education, his skills- and with these new tools I shall build my race into the proudest segment of your society\u201d. Let us look at what has changed in the last 50 years.<\/p>\n

BIOGRAPHY:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Gwen Point\u00a0holds a BEd from UBC, an MEd from the University of Portland, a\u00a0Doctorate in Education from SFU,\u00a0and an honorary doctorate from UVic. Her connections to our University stretch back decades. She\u2019s been a student, a member of the Board of Governors, a faculty member, and an Aboriginal Curriculum Coordinator, to name just a few of her roles.\u00a0Dr. Point has also held a number of provincial government and regional posts supporting education, child and family services, and First Nations communities. She is a respected St\u00f3:l\u00f5 leader, mentor, and cultural advisor who has contributed her cultural knowledge and experience to numerous books, conferences, workshops, and communities, and earned many accolades and awards.<\/p>\n
