Climate change is the pivotal issue of our times. Survival of modern civilizations and our way of life depends on how humans minimize the effects of a changing climate. In order to seize the significance of the changes to Earth\u2019s climate that have occurred since the industrial revolution, we need to compare the changes that happened over the last 150 years to those of the last few million years. It appears from studying climate variability over millions of years that only a period of climate stability (like that of the last 10,000 years) is suitable for the development of human civilization. The lens through which we investigate climate change and its impact on nature and human infrastructure is provided by science. Our scientific knowledge of the variability and causes of past and present climate change gives us the tools to develop new technology to mitigate these changes.<\/p>\n

In this presentation, I will describe how Earth\u2019s climate evolved over millions of years, the impacts of climate change on Earth\u2019s environment, the present state of our scientific understanding of climate change and the opportunities that climate change awareness brings to those who are willing to take up the challenge of mitigating the changes that are coming to our environment.<\/p>\n
