Data assimilation algorithms merge measurement data into a computational model with the aim of reducing uncertainties in the model predictions or to adjust model parameters. The desired result is an improved estimate of the state of a system that takes account of measurement error and partial observational coverage as well as the inadequacies of the numerical model. In this talk I will introduce the theory and present some simple demonstrations.
