More than an exercise in awesome alliteration, UFV\u2019s Faculty of Science AAAwards brought well-deserved recognition to department leaders.<\/p>\n

Led by Dean of Science Lucy Lee, the inaugural awards were meant to shine light on those quietly doing exemplary work all across the science spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have so many talented people in the science department, but often they\u2019re also quite modest as well. They need and deserve to have a champion to bring them into the spotlight,\u201d Lee explains.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s award recipients include:<\/p>\n

AAAward \u2014 Ben Vanderlei: His math class is always among the first to fill each semester and he has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/i>. \u201cThe way he teaches is an art,\u201d Lee says.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Outreach \u2014 Susan Milner: Her care and community involvement are so great that Lee nominated Susan for UFV\u2019s distinguished Betty Urquhart award, though she was not selected \u2014 as winners are most often chosen from the community at large.<\/p>\n

Terrific Teaching \u2014 Joss Ives: Received rave reviews from students and faculty, the latter often emulating his teaching style. Unfortunately, Joss was snatched up by UBC\u2019s science faculty department.<\/p>\n

Superb Service (staff) \u2014 Karen Cooper: \u201cShe does what it takes to make sure the job\u2019s done right and everyone succeeds. She\u2019s invaluable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Superb Service (faculty) \u2014Ron Wilen: A key person behind the regional science fair (and its head judge), Ron quietly organizes volunteers and students while making time when not busy teaching biology.<\/p>\n

Remarkable Research \u2014 Derek Harnett: A \u201cstar teacher\u201d, this physicist is known as a strong lecturer on topics such as Exotic Bound States of the Strong Nuclear Force, \u00a0in addition to leading student researchers through summer work and youth forums.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all such incredible stars and they\u2019re usually working behind the scenes where most people can\u2019t appreciate what they do,\u201d says Lee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time the public knows our science department is loaded with service and teaching talent.\u201d<\/p>\n
