Pesticides can degrade the quality of salmon habitat,
and they represent a challenge to Fisheries and Oceans approaches for protecting wild
fish populations. Pesticide contamination can be extensive in agricultural and urban
watersheds, and recent monitoring by Environment Canada has shown that surface
waters in major tributaries to the main stem of the Fraser River are frequently
contaminated with diverse mixtures of insecticides, herbicides, and other biocidal
compounds. The consequences of pesticide exposure on the health of salmon and the
viability of natural populations are still largely unknown. This uncertainty creates difficult
challenges for the management of threatened or endangered salmonids and the
restoration of pesticide-contaminated habitats. To address these important knowledge
gaps with respect to pesticide risk to salmonids, we will investigate an emerging
chemical class of insecticide, the neonicotinoids, for their sublethal impacts on the
development, physiology, and behavior of sockeye salmon.
Candidates will work in a team-based environment under the supervision of Dr. Vicki
Marlatt the principal investigator and senior supervisor, and with Dr. Chris Kennedy and
several Simon Fraser University (SFU) graduate and undergraduate students. The
principal laboratory is located at SFU, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Applications
are being accepted for June, 2015 or September, 2015 start dates. The deadline for the
SFU graduate studies application is Feb. 1st, 2015 for the June start date. The deadline
for the SFU graduate studies application is June 1st, 2015 for the September start date.
Prior to the SFU graduate studies application deadlines, interested candidates should
submit a single electronic PDF file to vicki.marlatt@sfu.ca that includes the following: a
cover letter; CV; one sample of scientific writing; and, contact information for three
references.

QUALIFICATIONS B.Sc. in biology/toxicology or related discipline Demonstrated excellence in academic achievement Excellent oral and written communication skills Experience with animal physiology, comparative endocrinology and molecular biology Training and experience in aqueous environmental chemistry would be an asset Experience in biology/toxicology lab and field research would be an asset Contact for further information or to … Read more

[2,65

post-1689","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-biology","category-job-board
["GET
