Hi everyone! Catherine back to recount LIYSF 2023 day 9! Today we started our day off with specialist lectures! It was alumni day so every specialist was a previous attendee of LIYSF!<\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

My lecture was with Dr. Stephen Priebe on Aerodynamics, Turbulent Flow, and Computational Fluid Dynamics. We covered the history of aerodynamics, common misconceptions on how flight works, and applications of computational fluid dynamics. This was expecially innteresting to me as I will be taking fluid dynamics next year at UFV!<\/p>\n

Manjot’s lecture was on past, present, and future cancer research with Dr. Stephen Maher, Assistant Professor in Translational Oncology, Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy at Trinity College, Dublin. Dr. Maher is a LIYSF alumni. He attended LIYSF 25 years ago and Manjot got the opportunity to interview him for the LIYSF social media platforms!<\/p>\n

After lunch we had a plenary lecture with Dr. Hiranya Peiris. Dr. Pieris spoke on the universe and it’s creation through the lense of a detective story!<\/p>\n

Dr. Peiris teaches at the University College London in the department of Physics and Astrophysics. Her talk began with discussing the big bang and the subsequent after glow. Dr. Peiris discussed using this afterglow and the clues we have found to learn more about the universe. She also talked to us about the recent developments in the past 10 years that have lead to answer questions about how old the universe is, what it contains, and it’s destiny.<\/p>\n

After Dr. Peiris’s lecture Manjot and I got to go up to the stage and take a photo with our Canada flag too!<\/p>\n

After the lecture with Dr. Peiris, Manjot and I went to the London Science Museum. This was such a cool experience! My favorite part was the Mathematics section. It was so interesting to see how they related mathematics to every other area of STEM.<\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

Another cool section and Manjot’s favorite was the Medicine and Bodies floor. We got to see an incredibly extensive history of medicine and the tools used. This was really impressive to see how many artifacts they had, and really gave an appreciation for how far medicine has come!<\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"<\/p>\n

Manjot had a really cool experience as she visited Rolls-Royce a few days ago and at the science museum she got to see one of their jet engines on display!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After the science museum we had dinner and the international cabaret! This was the first night of two where LIYSF attendees got to showcase traditional dances, songs, and other customs from home! this was so much fun! There was rhythmic gymnastics, line dancing, and even a Canadian singing a song from a Canadian artist!<\/p>\n

This was such a jam packed fun day! We were certainly tired at the end but so excited about all the things we learned!<\/p>\n
