{"id":10942,"date":"2022-03-25T11:05:42","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T18:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/?p=10942"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:29:03","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T19:29:03","slug":"class-field-trips-back-on-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/2022\/03\/25\/class-field-trips-back-on-course\/","title":{"rendered":"SLUEC Class field trips back on course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On February 18, <strong>Dr. Olav Lian<\/strong> and <strong>Carolyn Atkins <\/strong>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/land-and-environment\/\">School of Land Use and Environmental Change<\/a> took their GEOG 402 (Quaternary Geology &amp; Geomorphology) class headed out on a 3-day field trip to southern Vancouver Island. Their lecture was on the role of the BCGS in economic mineral exploration, employment opportunities for students, and the use of sophisticated drones in imaging and mapping the landscape. Another colleague, an archaeologist, gave students a long presentation on the use of geological and palaeoecological data to re-construct a landscape in northern Vancouver Island that may have served as a refugium for plants and animals, and perhaps First Peoples migrating south, during the last ice age.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10967 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2022\/03\/GEOG402.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"885\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2022\/03\/GEOG402.jpg 885w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2022\/03\/GEOG402-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2022\/03\/GEOG402-768x476.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Olav and Carolyn followed up with a two-day field trip with their GEOG 202: Geomorphology class earlier this month where they visited the southern interior.
