Dr. Quarmby shared her story of bringing attention to the climate crisis and her passion for science.<\/p>\n<p>Watermelon snow refers to red algal blooms among snow colonies of microorganisms. Normally green, the algae adapt to warmer temperatures by using red pigments as sunscreens. Unfortunately, this also speeds up snow melt, setting up one of the many feedback loops that magnifies polar warming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10355 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/science\/files\/2021\/03\/L.Quarmby.jpg 1386w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>She shared her story behind her latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapters.indigo.ca\/en-ca\/books\/watermelon-snow-science-art-and\/9780228003595-item.html?s_campaign=goo-DSA_Books&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwu5CDBhB9EiwA0w6sLQX3hEPSG4apRUaj-nbTJzuG8kRs0CG_kkE1-0sxe21GSJajzOgPIhoCrvsQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">Watermelon Snow<\/a>, from the vantage of a schooner full of artists on an adventure in the high Arctic.
