\"Wheeler-2014\"<\/a>Davida Kidd<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Visual Arts) and Debbie Wheeler<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Biology) recently collaborated on a collograph project.<\/p>\n

In Davida\u2019s words:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Cyborg Print Media collograph project was one in which we were challenged to create an insect with a mechanical component. \u00a0Additionally, a creative story was to take the place of the standard artist\u2019s statement. As part of the research for this project, I met with Dr. Debbie Wheeler, an instructor in the Biology department, for the purpose of getting information and inspiration from the \u2018bugs\u2019 in the science lab.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took photos of the ones I was most interested in. The huge Malaysian Dead Leaf praying mantis (Deroplatys lobata) was the one that immediately grabbed my attention. \u00a0It was huge, as well as having an interesting, almost beautiful sculptural form!<\/p>\n

\u201cTo integrate this creature with something mechanical, I decided to play off the mantis\u2019 own natural instincts \u2014 killing other bugs. \u00a0In this case, those \u2018bugs\u2019 were computer viruses. \u00a0This imaginary partly computerized mantis, which I named \u201cMike, the Mechanic,\u201d was woven into a short story as a Private Investigator looking for a killer, in the manner of a Mickey Spillane story. \u00a0The setting is within a CPU.<\/p>\n

On critique day, \u201cMike the Mechanic\u201d was just one of the many stories in the cyborg city.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Dr. Debbie Wheeler for taking the time and effort \u00a0to show me around the Entomology department. I presented her with one of the final prints from the edition which was a combination of traditional collograph with digital technology.
