{"id":4433,"date":"2026-03-18T16:04:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/?p=4433"},"modified":"2026-03-18T16:04:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T16:04:10","slug":"sasi-supports-dr-ambedkar-symposium-on-emancipation-2026-ase2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/2026\/03\/18\/sasi-supports-dr-ambedkar-symposium-on-emancipation-2026-ase2026\/","title":{"rendered":"SASI Supports Dr. Ambedkar Symposium on Emancipation 2026 (ASE2026)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On March 15-16, 2026, the South Asian Studies Institute (SASI) was proud to support the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riially.github.io\/ASE2026\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Ambedkar Symposium on Emancipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ASE 2026), hosted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chetna.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chetna Association of Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Simon Fraser University (SFU) and University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. The symposium brought together scholars, activists, and community members for critical dialogue on &#8220;Overcoming Caste Barriers for Social and Economic Equality,&#8221; focusing on the ongoing pursuit of social justice and the enduring legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opening day, Dr. Satwinder Bains, SASI Research Associate and Advisor to the Chetna Association of Canada, moderated the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Books &amp; Authors&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> panel featuring two significant works: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting the Blemish of Caste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Om Parkash VK Gahatraj and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Past is Never Dead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Ujjal Dosanjh (former Premier of BC). Alongside the authors, Dr. Bains guided a conversation on how narrative and activism can dismantle systemic barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SASI&#8217;s Micro-Exhibit: Documenting Chetna&#8217;s Organizational History Through the Bodalia Lens<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To complement the symposium\u2019s themes, SASI presented a micro-exhibit showcasing a curated selection of photographs, textual documents, and ephemera from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sacda.ca\/index.php\/Detail\/collections\/161\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chandra Bodalia Fonds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that document Chetna&#8217;s community initiatives and activism over the years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thamilini Jothilingam (Digital Asset Archivist) introduced the exhibit during opening remarks and thanked Jai Birdi (Executive Director) and the Chetna Association of Canada for their collaboration with SASI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bodalia collection remains the largest known private collection of South Asian Canadian community life in British Columbia.
