Their altruistic motive of his family to ensure that Chandra`s work is preserved and memorialized as well, is to be commended. For many years, they have been the loving stewards of this legacy of Chandra\u2019s and the emotional heartfelt goodbye his son Vimal said to the photos will forever remain with us as caretakers of this valuable Canadian asset\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chandra Bodalia collection is the largest known private collection of a South Asian Canadian community<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3779 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/20240725_095716-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/> member in Canada and the largest bequest to UFV. The collection spans three decades, from the 1980s to 2017, and covers a tremendously vast and diverse population demographic. Chandra Bodalia diligently documented the vibrant linguistic, social, cultural, political, economic, and religious diversity of South Asian Canadian communities in BC, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very attached to all of Chandra\u2019s photographs,\u201d said Chanchalben Bodalia (Chandra\u2019s mother). \u201cThey keep the memory of my son alive for me. But I was\u00a0also concerned about the deteriorating condition of these photographs in our garage. I am, therefore, very thankful to SASI for taking the initiative of digitizing his photographs and to the RBCM for safely storing them. Thanks to them, my son and his contributions will be remembered forever.<\/p>\n<p>Chandravadan &#8220;Chandra&#8221; Bodalia was born in 1948 in the village of Sisodra near Navsari in Gujarat, India. Bodalia<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3778 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple-1024x637.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple-1536x955.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Vishva-Hindu-Parishad-Temple.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> immigrated to Canada in 1976 and settled in Vancouver, BC. His artistic spirit followed him in all his work as he began a career as a photojournalist in the late\u00a01980s. His photographs provide a vital link between the past and present since a significant amount of South Asian immigration to BC and Canada occurred from 1970s onwards. The collection is a vast and critically important body of records of arts and culture from diverse South Asian Canadian community events, activities, and supportive activism. The photographs also reflect the intercultural connections and collaborations within the immigrant communities in Canada as well as the ongoing complex transnational ties to the South Asian region.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3782 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-263x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-896x1024.jpg 896w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-768x877.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-1345x1536.jpg 1345w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage-1793x2048.jpg 1793w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2024\/10\/Garage.jpg 1855w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/>\u201cThis is such a remarkable collection,\u201d said Vimal Bodalia (Chandra\u2019s son). \u201cIt shows the history of the Lower Mainland and the province whether it was political, religious, or events around the communities of British\u202fColumbia. Our family is so grateful that years of hard work and attending these events can be displayed for everyone to see. We are looking forward to seeing all the important historical events around the province that our father has captured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Director of Archives, Emma Wright\u00a0affirms,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u201cWe are honoured to partner in preserving these records and\u00a0assist\u00a0the important community archiving efforts spearheaded by SASI. The Royal BC Museum\u2019s\u00a0ongoing support for the SACDA over the last few years reflects our\u00a0commitment\u00a0to amplifying marginalized and excluded voices. Following digitization, the physical collection will\u00a0finally\u00a0be transferred for description, rehousing, ongoing preservation and public access by the Royal BC Museum at their new PARC Campus facility. The collection will be openly and freely available on the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive (<a href=\"https:\/\/sacda.ca\/\">https:\/\/sacda.ca<\/a>) in the following years.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis is a monumental collection,\u201d says Thamilini Jothilingam, Digital Archivist for the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive. \u201cThe width and breadth of the diversity of the South Asian Canadian communities Bodalia documented here is very important. In the context of Canadian history and historiography that has systematically silenced and erased the South Asian Canadian lived experiences for decades and centuries, Bodalia\u2019s photographs hold the evidentiary and visual narratives, the ethnographical traces of a collective, intercultural, and communal presence.\u201d\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">\u202f<\/span><span class=\"x_eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The SASI welcomes all to join this collective archival journey!<br \/>\nIf you know Chandra Bodalia and\/or if you or your organization have been photographed by him at any events, please reach out to us.
