On this day, and everyday, we recognize and celebrate First Nations, M\u00e9tis, and Inuit language, history, contributions, culture, diversity, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Abbotsford, the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of Fraser Valley is thankful to be located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the St\u00f3:l\u014d Peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selxw\u00ed:chel in Halq\u2019em\u00e9ylem translates to the middle of three, referring to the City of Abbotsford. Selxw\u00ed:chel is located in the middle of three communities: Matsqui, Sem\u00e1:th and Nooksack. However, the Assembly of First Nations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afn.ca\/all-news\/news\/assembly-of-first-nations-national-chief-perry-bellegarde-welcomes-name-change-for-june-21-national-indigenous-peoples-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AFN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called for a renaming of June 21 to Indigenous Peoples Day. Therefore, on June 21, 2017, an official renaming was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/national-aboriginal-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Trudeau announced the name change from National Aboriginal Day to National Indigenous Peoples Day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was met with much support. The AFN\u2019s National Chief Perry Bellegarde <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/afn.ca\/all-news\/news\/assembly-of-first-nations-national-chief-perry-bellegarde-welcomes-name-change-for-june-21-national-indigenous-peoples-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his support for the name change as it is in line with the \u201cinternational recognition of Indigenous Peoples and consistent with AFN resolution (23\/2013) calling for the name change.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This made June 21, 2018 the first National Indigenous Peoples Day following the name change. National Indigenous Peoples Day is also a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/national-aboriginal-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statutory holiday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">June is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca\/eng\/1683124800202\/1683124846095\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Indigenous History Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a time to reflect on and learn the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not done so already, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/indigenouspeoples\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/01\/UNDRIP_E_web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(UNDRIP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Truth and Reconciliation Commision of Canada\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ehprnh2mwo3.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">94 Calls to Action <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are two mandatory readings Canadian\u2019s should familiarize themselves with.
