{"id":3430,"date":"2023-06-14T00:12:36","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T00:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/?p=3430"},"modified":"2023-06-14T00:12:36","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T00:12:36","slug":"haq-and-history-travels-to-port-moody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/2023\/06\/14\/haq-and-history-travels-to-port-moody\/","title":{"rendered":"Haq and History Travels to Port Moody"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3432 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picture1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picture1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picture1.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>On Sunday, May 7<sup>th<\/sup>, the SASI team attended the opening reception of the<a href=\"https:\/\/portmoodymuseum.org\/index.php\/current-exhibit\/\"> Haq and History exhibition<\/a> at the Port Moody Station Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Haq and History is a collaborative exhibition created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalbcmuseum.bc.ca\/\">Royal BC Museum<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufv.ca\/sasi\/\">South Asian Studies Institute<\/a> at the University of the Fraser Valley, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/saclp.southasiancanadianheritage.ca\/\">South Asian Canadian Legacy Project<\/a>. The Haq and History exhibit offers visitors the chance to reflect upon stories from and about South Asian Canadians across BC.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3431 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picturenn-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picturenn-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/sasi\/files\/2023\/06\/Picturenn.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/>Through panel texts, visitors to Haq and History learn about Punjabi immigrants working in sawmills in the 1920\u2019s; hear about travel from Punjab to Canada in the 1950\u2019s; learn some of the challenges of sourcing Indian food in Vancouver in the 1960\u2019s; and learn about memories of life in the now-abandoned town of Paldi on Vancouver Island in the 1940\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The Port Moody Station Museum added information into the exhibit about early South Asian immigration specific to Port Moody. They hope to embed this history into the well-developed storylines of the Port Moody forestry industry as \u201cguests reflect on stories from South Asian Canadian immigrants, including details about work, homelife and keeping their traditions alive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition closes at the Port Moody Station Museum on June 28th. It will travel to the<a href=\"https:\/\/goldenbcmuseums.com\/\"> Golden Museum and Archives<\/a> in November 2023 and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/centre.nikkeiplace.org\/\">Nikkei National Museum<\/a> (Burnaby) in September 2024.
