Provost’s Lunch and Learn — “Building Pathways Between Programs” — Nov 27

This Provost Lunch and Learn provides an early report and energetic discussion on the work of The Strategic Initiative Funds (SIF) Building Pathways Between Programs (BP)2 project. The (BP)2 project team has been working on recommendations for how UFV can expand learning pathways for students who have earned vocational and non-credit credentials at UFV.

Over its 50-year history, UFV has graduated more than 50,000 students from diverse programs that have served the needs of our communities and employers. In many of these programs, students received credentials but no academic credit for their coursework because these programs were classified as vocational or trades educationWhen UFV’s vocational and non-credit credentials have been subsequently used in a small number of programs, the processes have been confusing, ad hoc or inconsistent, poorly understood, lacking sufficient resources, and absent transparency within and beyond the institution.

UFV’s Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP)—IYAQAWTWXW, or House of Transformation— and the Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM) Plan offer strategic goals by which UFV can enhance its tradition as an access institution:

  • Identify and remove access barriers for individuals from marginalized and underrepresented groups
  • Provide accessible and flexible opportunities to support personalized, lifelong learning
  • Integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into all aspects of our institutional culture
  • Support various pathways that lead to the attainment and recognition of students’ educational goals

This session provides an overview of the work and specific recommendations on how to increase student mobility between programs of different types and credit structures. At the heart of the recommendations is a call for credit equity and organizational changes designed to improve system coordination and supports for returning and non-traditional students. We are looking forward to seeing you at this lunch and learn!
