Multi Factor Authentication for logins outside Canada

March 10 2021

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) has now been enabled for UFV employees and students that are logging in from outside of Canada. When UFV employees and students enrolled for self-serve password reset (SSPR), they also enrolled for MFA.

With MFA, there is an extra layer of security to your sign-ins. “Multi-factor” refers to using two or more items to verify your identity when you sign in, typically:

  • something you know (i.e., your UFV email and password) and
  • something you have (i.e., a time-based passcode from your mobile device or email).

This creates a layered defense, preventing unauthorized access from your UFV account if your password is compromised.

Why implement MFA?
As UFV moves to the cloud, we want to keep your information safe. The largest threat is password compromise, usually by the hacking of third-party services, phishing, or choosing weak passwords. COVID-19 has accelerated our adoption of remote work and we are now more open to potential threats. We cannot rely on passwords alone to protect our information, and credential theft is easy and happens frequently. All Canadian universities are facing this same challenge and many are already using MFA technology to secure their systems.
