STOTHW – Phony Virus Reports

There is a worldwide scam taking place that has been gaining momentum recently. A user will receive a call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft advising that the user’s computer is infected with a virus.

The caller will then instruct the user to go to a Website where they are directed to download and install remote-control software. In a typical scenario, the caller will advise the user that the virus can be eradicated (by the caller via the remote-control program) and “lifelong” protection provided for a fee of $130.

The unwitting user provides credit card and other personal information which the malicious caller uses for criminal purposes. Be aware that Microsoft, or other legitimate companies, will not call users about infected computers.

The best way to deal with these types of calls is to hang up.
