They came to S\u2019olh temexw (St\u00f3:lo territory) to the community of Sts\u2019ailes at the end of June, after gathering in Vancouver at Jericho Beach.\u00a0 Local cultural leader Kelsey Charlie welcomed everyone and invited his 14-year old son (Ryan)\u00a0 to dance a welcome for the SIETAR guests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The University of the Fraser Valley\u2019s Senior Advisor on Indigenous Affairs, Shirley Hardman, and Communications faculty member Marcella LaFever enjoyed offering a workshop titled \u201cHonouring St\u00f3:l\u014d place, identity, and spirit: The land teaches us how to live.\u201d The workshop used the focus of St\u00f3:l\u014d storytelling and UFV\u2019s experience of indigenizing the academy to stimulate workshop participants to think of their own stories of place and to see how they, as teachers, facilitators and leaders can honour the learner\u2019s identity and spirit by encouraging storytelling as a way of knowing.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/files\/2014\/07\/Marcella-and-Shirley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-558\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.ufv.ca\/indigenizingtheacademy\/files\/2014\/07\/Marcella-and-Shirley.jpg\" alt=\"Marcella and Shirley\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the close of the workshop, the participants were asked to identify ways that they could add the lessons of the workshop to their personal teaching philosophies.
